Chicken and Poker Creek
Chicken is a census-designated place (CDP) in Southeast Fairbanks Census Area, Alaska. It is a community founded on gold mining and is one of the few surviving gold rush towns in Alaska. The population was 17 at the 2000 census, 5 of them being children. Chicken was settled by gold miners in the late 1800s and in 1902 the local post office was established requiring a community name. Due to the prevalence of ptarmigan in the area that name was suggested as the official name for the new community. However, the spelling could not be agreed on and Chicken was used to avoid embarrassment. (Wikipedia)
Poker Creek is located on the Top of the World Highway between Dawson City, Yukon and Tok, Alaska, at the Alaska/Yukon border. As it is just a Customs post, and the road is closed once the snow flies, there are no permanent residents. In an average year, the road is open from May 15 through September 15. Poker Creek sits at an elevation of 4,127 feet (1,258 meters), is 66 miles (105 km) from Dawson City and 108 miles 176 km) from Tok. (INTERNET)
The Top of the World Highway was closed for weeks before and two days after we drove on it. We were one of the very few individuals who were privileged to drive on the very precarious and often washed out Top of the World Highway in 2010.
